What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), often referred to as ‘Tapping’ is a therapeutic method that combines elements of congitive therapy with acupressure. It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing emotional issues or physical symptoms. The goal is to reduce stress, release negative emotions and promote overall wellbeing.
How It Works:
EFT is based on the concept that negative emotions or unresolved issues can cause disruptions in the body’s energy system. By tapping on energy points, EFT aims restore balance and help release emotional or physical discomfort. A typical EFT sessions includes:
- Identifying the Issue: Focusing on a specific problem (e.g anxiety, pain or a traumatic memory)
- Setup Statement: Repeating an affirmation acknowledging the issue and accepting oneself (e.g “even though I feel (emotion), I deeply and completely accept myself”)
- Tapping Sequence: Gently tapping on a series of acupressure points in a specific order whilst verbalising thoughts related to the issue
Common Uses:
EFT is used for a variety of emotional and physical challenges, including:
- Stress, anxiety and depression
- Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Phobias and Fears
- Chronic pain or discomfort
- Enhacing performance (in sports, academics or public speaking)
